A floor plan is not decoration. It is the shortest route to knowing what can fit, what cannot move and what needs to be coordinated before furniture is ordered.
Start with the title block and legend
Plans are not all drawn the same way. Symbols, line weights and abbreviations vary by architect and project. Find the title block, drawing date, scale and legend before you interpret anything else. If the sheet has been reduced, copied or exported, the printed scale may no longer be reliable.
Also check which plan you are looking at. A furniture plan, architectural plan, reflected ceiling plan and electrical plan answer different questions. A clean furniture layout can still fail if it was based on an old architectural sheet or never checked against the power plan.
Mark the things that cannot move
Start with the hard constraints: perimeter walls, interior walls, columns, doors, windows, built-in millwork, plumbing and mechanical rooms. Then look at how each one affects the furniture.
- Door swings need clear space to open and close.
- Columns can interrupt a workstation run or create an awkward gap.
- Windows affect glare, daylight and the usable height of nearby panels or storage.
- Built-ins may need access even when they look like ordinary wall lines.
- Mechanical and electrical rooms usually need a clear approach and service access.
What a furniture plan adds
A simple diagram is useful for learning the layers. A furniture plan adds the station geometry, dimension strings, storage, components and repeated settings needed to coordinate an actual project.
Use dimensions, not guesses
A room that looks large on screen may have less usable space than expected once doors, columns and circulation are accounted for. Use written dimensions where available. If a critical dimension is missing, field-verify it before treating the furniture plan as final.
Scale is useful for early planning, but it is not a substitute for a confirmed dimension. This matters most at pinch points such as entries, aisles, conference-table edges, storage doors and the space behind seated users.
Trace power and data before placing stations
Look for floor boxes, wall outlets, power poles, poke-throughs and data locations. The symbols may be on another sheet, so check the electrical and technology plans when they are available. Furniture can carry power and data, but it still needs a coordinated path back to the building source.
Plan circulation around real use
A line between two desks is not automatically a usable aisle. Think about chairs pulled back, drawers open, people passing, visitors entering, equipment being serviced and the route to doors and shared spaces. Project-specific accessibility, life-safety and building requirements must be confirmed by the responsible project professionals.

The best starting file is a current architectural floor plan with dimensions or a reliable scale. A PDF is usually enough for the first conversation. Add a short note about headcount, departments, private offices, meeting rooms, storage and any furniture you plan to keep.
